Biographical Sketch by ERIC BORNSTEIN
Eric Bornstein holds a Bachelor of Fine Arts in painting and sculpture from Clark University and a Master of Fine Arts in art history from Harvard University. Bornstein has designed masks professionally since 1982 and his principal activities since then have focused on mask theater. He studied maskmaking with master maskmakers Agung Suardana in Bali and Donato Sartori in Italy. While working as an actor, dancer, and teacher, he founded the Behind the Mask Theatre. His masks have been used for and by many performers, agencies, dance and theatrical groups including: master mask dancer I Nyoman Catra, Beijing Opera star Ghaffar Pourazar, African circus sensation Cyriaque Bouazock, the Isabella Stewart Gardener Museum, the Children's Museum, the Museum of Fine Arts Boston, Cambridge River Fest, King Richard's Faire, Christmas and Summer Revels, Dance Umbrella, Boston Lyric Opera, Boston Ballet II, and First Night Boston. Bornstein's masks were recently exhibited at The Society Of Arts and Crafts on Newbury Street in Boston.
Bornstein's masks or photographs of his masks have been exhibited and/or won purchase awards at the Danforth Museum, The Copley Society, The Golden Gallery and The Society Of Arts and Crafts on Newbury Street in Boston, Charlestown Preservation Society, The Art Exchange in San Francisco, The Light Factory Photographic Arts Center in Charlotte, CMAC, Codman Corp., Polaroid Corp., Clark University Gallery, Northeastern University, and The GK Collection in Philadelphia. Images of his masks have won Art Director's Awards, the Award Of Excellence for creativity in advertising, and have appeared in the magazines, Communication Arts, Print, Bon Appetit and Graphic Arts: U.S.A. His mask images have been featured in The Boston Globe, The B.G. Magazine, The B.G. Calendar Magazine (2 covers), The Los Angeles Times, The Boston Herald, The Phoenix, The Cambridge Chronicle, The Improper Bostonian, and others. Bornstein and highlights of his works have appeared at numerous occasions on channels 2/44 (WGBH), 4 (WBZ-Virginia Cha), 5 - Joyce Kulhawyk, 7 (WHDH), 25, and 56 news, as well as on 10 (CC-TV)and 66 (BNN-TV).

Eric Bornstein '80 recently graduated Harvard University with a MFA in Art History. He distinguished himself by winning the Thomas Small award for academic excellence, graduating at the top of his class with a 4.0 GPA. Since establishing the Behind The Mask Theatre and Studio in 1982 his award-winning masks and masked performers have been used by many museums, galleries, agencies, dance and theater companies, and performers including: The Museum of Fine Arts, The Isabella Stewart Gardener Museum, The Children's Museum, The Society for Arts and Crafts, First Night Boston, The Boston Lyric Opera, The Boston Ballet II, The Art of Black Dance and Music, Christmas and Summer Revels, King Richard's Faire, master mask-dancer I Nyoman Catra, Beijing Opera star Ghaffar Pourazar, and African circus sensation Cyriaque Bouazock. Articles, interviews, and photographs of Eric with his masks have appeared in a variety of major news media, including The Boston Globe and The Globe Magazine, The Los Angeles Times, Communication Arts, Print, Bon Appetit and Graphic Arts: U.S.A. magazines, and channels 4, 5, and 7 in Boston. Eric lives in Cambridge, MA with his wife Antonette Galasso and currently teaches a variety of classes and workshops ranging from maskmaking, portrait and figure drawing, collage, and Greek and Roman art history to yoga, meditation, massage, and jujitsu in the Boston area.
